Gypsy Rose ~ More Before & After Photos

We have had four months of sanding, scraping, rebuilding, repairing, painting, oiling wood, varnishing, polishing brass, fiber-glassing,  replacing parts and rigging, and cleaning.
Now, It's time to set the mast and put her in the water.

Are we happy?
You Bet!

Some of you asked for more photos . . .
There are still a lot of little jobs to do.
Finishing up the port hole windows
&
Replacing all the rigging  (ropes to all you non-sailors).
Sailboats have what seems like miles of different ropes
and each one has a job to do.
This boat has been sitting for so long that all of her's were rotten.

We're almost on the water.
Hopefully my next post will be lake photos.

Please leave a comment, I read them all.

We Are Itching To Get Her In The Water

She is still in the driveway but not for long.
We said we would launch her in June
and
June has one more weekend.

We are so close to being ready that we have sailing fever.

Be sure and come back to see my launch day post,
but in the meantime,
leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Gypsy Rose hatch covers are done!

Here we are coating the hatch cover with epoxy resin,
which is a super waterproof high end plastic.

We also did the forward and rear hatches
when doing the main hatch.

Here is Connie wetting out the 6 oz fiberglass cloth with more epoxy resin.
This will make the hatch covers very tough
so they will stand up to being walked on.

Done except for sanding the fiberglass off the edges.

Here is the final before and after shot.
What do you think?
Thanks for stopping by my blog and happy sailing to you!!

And The Winner Is!

Before I announce the winner,
I'll explain the reason I have wood-putty on my fingers.

Still working on the hatch cover.
No matter how tight the pieces fit together there are always spots to putty in.

Lots of sanding on this boat project but it will all be worth it when we are done.

All the names of everyone who participated are going into my old beat up cowboy hat.

And now for the lucky winner!

Congratulations to Donna Wilkes!
The Rust Goddess wins our $25. Amazon gift card!!
Thanks so much to everybody who participated in our drawing.
We will be having at least one more before Gypsy Rose is finished.

Have a great day and smooth sailing.

Gpysy Rose Hatch Cover and $25 giveaway.

Here is a photo of the hatch cover right after we brought Gypsy Rose home from the folks we bought her from.

As you can see she is pretty well weather beaten.
WE ARE GOING TO FIX THAT!!

First I will peel off the damaged layers of veneer until I get down to good wood.

Good wood at last!
The veneer here still had some damage on the edge so
I scored a straight line with my razor knife and removed the damaged part.
Now I have layed a thin strip of wood in to fair out the surface
of the hatch cover.  The paint cans are just for weight while the glue drys.

Hey, boat restoring is hungry work and this blog after all is called
Woodworkin and good eats so rib steak here I come.

Here I am sealing up the wood with 2 coats of high quality exterior house paint.

Now it's time to cut the cedar strips that we will cover our hatch with.
Don't know what I mean?
See the cedar strip yacht tender I built elsewhere on this blog.

Now I am routering a bead on one edge of the strips and a cove on the other edge.

See how that makes the strips nest together?

Strip number 1!! I am excited!

Here we are 15 strips in.
Okay, that's it for this progress report.
Don't forget to enter our giveaway by joining my blog and leaving a comment.

Happy blogging.

$25 Gift Card Give-A-Way

You've got to start somewhere, so here we go!
Get out the wood cleaner, the stripper, the scrub brushes, the sandpaper and the elbow grease.
It's going to be a labor of love.

April 2nd is our 37th Wedding Anniversary.
In celebration we want to spread the love with a
"Give-A-Away".

The prize will be a $25 Amazon gift card,

and all you have to do to get in on the drawing
is be a follower to my blog and leave a comment
between now and midnight (my time) April 15th.

Connie has already named her "Gypsy Rose".
Right now she looks a bit like a "Weed",
but we have every intention of changing her to a "Rose".

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think
about this new project of mine.

Restoring Gypsy Rose

Connie and I found this old wooden sailboat while out for a drive one day.  We have been sailors for many years and have owned 3 different sailboats.

Being woodworkers we immediately saw the potential of how beautiful this boat could be.  Having the name Rose as a family name for 4 generations, Connie named the boat Gypsy Rose.

Boy do we ever have a lot of work to do now!  The plan is to be finished and sailing her by June.

We will take it in small bites and keep at it until she is done.

Here is the main hatch cover.  This is where I have decided to start while Connie gets busy with sanding other parts of the boat.

Check in from time to time to see the progress Connie and I are making on this project.

Please leave your comments because we absolutely love hearing from you.

Welcome To My Kitchen

Everybody's got a favorite spot,
and  this one is mine.
Come on in and let me show you around.

If you watch HGTV you might think
you can't afford to do this,
but with a simple plan and rough lumber
it doesn't have to cost an arm & a leg.
We love our backyard space.

Here is our outdoor dining area.
We went for a sort of  a Tex Mex theme for the
dining room and kitchen.
Note the chalk board menu.

Here is the bar and saloon doors we built that separate the kitchen and dining area.

The wooden box is actually an ice chest.

Now let's check out the kitchen.

Here are my two pellet grills.

 The cold water sink.

Here is the Big Green Egg charcoal grill.

 Double propane burners.
Some HOT..HOT chilli has been cooked on these as well as wok cooking etc.

I told you it was Tex Mex.  Cool huh?

I wish you could sit down and stay a while.
I'd fire up a grill and start cookin!

Thanks for checking out my blog.

I would love to hear your comments
and if you're in the neighborhood stop by for some good food.

Steve (and Connie)
